Composer and performer Harold Budd's reductive strategies in composition and improvisation are legendary. Brian Eno has described BuddÕs music as Élonely. He's a great abstract painter, trapped in the body of a musician an apt description for works that evoke the empty spaces and haunting solitude of his beloved Mojave Desert landscapes.
From 1986 into the 90's Budd resided in England where collaborated with many great musicians, including Eno, The Cocteau Twins, Jah Wobble, Hector Zazou, Andy Partridge, and Daniel Lanois. He thinks of himself as lucky to work with artists who I admire tremendously and can join in some pursuit that neither one of us would have thought up ourselves. Back in the US he's continued his collaborations and released many solo recordings. He has recently completed a score for Gregg Araki's film Mysterious Skin.
His new album, Avalon Sutra, which appears on David SylvianÕs Samadhi Sound label is a work of which he is very fond, and one he considers perhaps his most personal record ever, though he can't quite determine why. As for the people who love his work, he says, if they come to it and embrace it, then I presume it's for the same reasons that I do, and that we have a kind of a bond. It's always my intention to make it as pretty as possible. Devastatingly pretty. That's it.
In his first Los Angeles appearance since 2003 at Club Largo, Budd duets with multi-wind instrumentalist Jon Gibson of the Philip Glass Ensemble as well as performs solo works for piano. Also on the program is Lirio, a work for gong from 1970 and first-ever concert performances of two recent string quartets and solo works for percussion and guitar.
In addition to Gibson, guest artists include percussionist Alex Cline, guitarist Clive Wright and a string quartet comprised of cellist Jessica Catron, violist Natalie Brejcha and violinists Jeff Gauthier and Johnny Chang.
There will be a question and answer session with Harold Budd following the performance.
Performances begin at 8:30 p.m.
